YK:n kansainvälinen maatalouden kehittämisrahasto IFAD aloittaa yhteistyön Afrikan suurimman kehityspankin kanssa. Tavoitteena on arvioida maatalouden kehitystoimien tuloksia Afrikassa vuosina 1996-2005. IFAD:n yhteistyön lähtökohtana on tarve selvittää, millaiset kehitystoimet ovat parhaiten parantaneet maaseudun elinoloja Afrikassa. Afrikan maiden maatalouden tuottavuus on laskenut viimeisen kahden vuosikymmenen aikana, mikä on poikkeavaa muihin kehitysmaihin verrattuna.
