02/29/2008 India has announced its budget for the next financial year. In a move to provide a major relief to the small farmers, the government has decided to cancel their entire debt. It may be noted that for past many years now the farmers have been committing suicides due to indebtedness and other related reasons.

02/26/2008 Le coltivazioni transgeniche aumentano l'uso dei pesticidi e sono inefficaci nella lotta contro la povertà. Sono queste le due conclusioni del rapporto "Chi beneficia dell'impiego dei transgenici?" presentato nei giorni scorsi da 'Friends of the Earth International'. In Brasile, l'uso del RoundUp (glifosato) è aumentato dell'80% nei soli quattro anni dal 2000 al 2004. Negli Stati Uniti, tra il 1995 ed il 2004, l'aumento è stato di 15 volte. Secondo lo studio, il risultato di tutto ciò è un numero ogni volta maggiore di piantagioni resistenti al glifosato che provoca, oltre all'aumento dei costi di produzione per i contadini, gravi impatti ambientali - riporta A Sud. Le piantagioni di soia, mais e cotone incentivano l'uso di pesticidi ed aumentano la resistenza agli erbicidi. Questi tre prodotti costituiscono il 95% della superficie mondiale seminata con coltivazioni transgeniche.

Making rice climate proof?
02/07/2008 The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a US$ 19 million grant to develop rice varieties that can withstand the effects of climate change. The money will benefit nearly half a million farmers in Africa and Asia who depend on rain fed agriculture for their livelihoods.

Food security will be endangered
02/07/2008 Impoverished regions of South Asia will be hit first and hardest by climate change, along with southern Africa, say scientists. Under the circumstances the best strategy for agriculture is diversity not monocultures. Solutions from outside are unlikely to work so there will be a need for localised approach.
