The decision by G8 leaders to organise formal talks with leading developing countries on limiting global warming is more significant than it might appear. But it does not compensate for the continued shortsightedness of the United States, says David Dickson.

It is becoming clearer that the use of fossil fuels is impacting our changing climate, but political and financial support for these fuels makes it more difficult to wean ourselves off of them. OneWorld presents part two of a three-part series on climate change from its new "treeless" magazine, Perspectives, which offers more background and context on the issue, viewpoints from non-profit organizations, and ways for individuals to get involved.

Despite poverty, poor governance, and a decade of insurgency, small initiatives in Nepal's energy sector are bringing big results. While the planned "mega" projects have stalled, their "micro" counterparts have been successful in bringing eco-friendly energy to Nepal's large remote areas.

If Al Qaeda is indeed to blame for Thursday's bomb attacks in London, it makes sense that they would try to disrupt the course of the G8 summit, says TomPaine.com's Patrick Doherty. The terrorist network needs the West to remain dependent on Middle Eastern oil and to continue to appear as imperial aggressors--the summit's focus on climate change and African poverty could change all that.
