07/19/2005 It is a scene usually reserved for Nigeria: thousands are rallying in support of impoverished villagers who refuse to let the oil multinational Shell onto their land to construct what they believe to be a dangerous pipeline. G8 Summit.
07/19/2005 The decision by G8 leaders to organise formal talks with leading developing countries on limiting global warming is more significant than it might appear. But it does not compensate for the continued shortsightedness of the United States, says David Dickson.

07/15/2005 It is becoming clearer that the use of fossil fuels is impacting our changing climate, but political and financial support for these fuels makes it more difficult to wean ourselves off of them. Mitha Koirala with Her Biogas Plant, Sarangot, Nepal
07/15/2005 Despite poverty, poor governance, and a decade of insurgency, small initiatives in Nepal's energy sector are bringing big results. French president Jacques Chirac was one of the first to express his sympathy over the London bombings, but he still managed to push through a G8 agreement on climate change yesterday.
07/08/2005 If Al Qaeda is indeed to blame for Thursday's bomb attacks in London, it makes sense that they would try to disrupt the course of the G8 summit, says TomPaine.com's Patrick Doherty. The terrorist network needs the West to remain dependent on Middle Eastern oil and to continue to appear as imperial aggressors--the summit's focus on climate change and African poverty could change all that.
