U.S. religious leaders have found a common cause: ending global poverty. With their rallying point next week’s G-8 summit, Evangelical, Protestant, and Catholic leaders are pressing President Bush and Congress to boost American leadership and financial commitment to the global campaign to make poverty history--and they are telling their congregations to do the same.

The civil sector did much more on the establishment of new relations in the region, and their normalization, than the states of the Dayton Triangle themselves. It made an important step forward towards understanding, renewed trust, and opened the doors to the future for the region. These points were reinforced by the 10th Session of the Igman Initiative held in Belgrade last several days.

A new report by the Brookings Institution shows President Bush has significantly exaggerated the amount of aid his administration has provided to sub-Saharan Africa. With the approaching G8 summit and recent aid commitments made by E.U. nations, Bush is facing increasing pressure to be more cooperative internationally and encourage the efforts of poor countries.

The G-8 summit will focus on two global problems that have long been at odds--poverty and global warming. But an innovative plan led by Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica shows how poor countries can commit to greenhouse gas limits while promoting development--by providing them market incentives to maintain the environment.

The deal announcing 100% debt cancellation from some sources for 18 countries marks an enormous victory for advocates around the world. But work remains to achieve the full vision of debt cancellation: the G-8 deal does not represent full debt cancellation for Africa and the global South, and many countries are still spending more on debt service than on health care and education.
