While most refugees are driven from their home by conflict, anybody who flees out of fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or membership of a particular social group or political opinion is entitled to protection by the 140+ countries that have signed the Geneva Convention. There are now about 10 million international refugees, 20 million displaced in their own countries, and about 11 million "stateless" people, who have no country to call home.
Thousands of Kenyans displaced by post-election violence, who say
they lack the resources to rebuild their homes and
businesses, are being forced out of camps by the government and
dwindling aid
from international organizations.
