04/21/2006 25 per cent of the seats in Delhi private schools are reserved for poor students, to be provided free. But this provision is dodged in numerous ways; schools claim ignorance of the law, that they can't find poor students, that poor students have to be educated separately even if admitted, and so on. Deepa A reports.

04/20/2006 Economic growth and poverty reduction have occurred unevenly across, and even within, Asian countries. This paper by Naila Kabeer focuses on the chronic nature of poverty, and explores why social exclusion makes it more difficult for some sections of the poor to take advantage of the opportunities generated by economic growth. Social exclusion therefore presents a particular challenge to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Asia.

04/07/2006 In India, the development programs and public services are usually implemented at village level and most often in main village where non-dalits are living. Generally the dalits are less access to these facilities due to spatial segregation. Moreover, even when the basic facilities were easily available to the dalits, often they were denied or restricted to use those facilities by non-dalits. This situation obviously makes them stay in poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition.

In this context, the present article tries to understand the theoretical and analytical inter linkages between the spatial inequality and poverty in general and to analyse the nature and pattern of spatial discrimination against dalits in particular through providing with empirical evidences.
