Stockholm: Ruth Manorama a Dalit herself, 'for her commitment over Dalit women's causes, has bagged the 2006 Right Livelihood Award, better known as Alternate Nobel Prize, it was announced by Akob von Uexkull, the founder of the awards, during a ceremony at the Swedish Foreign Ministry's press room on Thursday.

“Vega” Humanitarian Organization from Skopje strongly opposes the idea of the local self-government in Suto Orizari Municipality to change the name of the “July 26” elementary school into “Arben Bajrami” Elementary. VEGA condemned the already adopted decision of the Local School Board that the name should change.

Yhdistyneet Kansakunnat kiinnitti huomiota oppimisen ja kehityksen väliseen yhteyteen kansainvälisenä lukutaitopäivänä kahdeksas syyskuuta. Pääsihteeri Kofi Annan painotti lausunnossaan lukutaidon merkitystä ja oppimisen edellytyksiä kehityksen vahvistajina. Myös UNESCO:n pääjohtaja Koïchuro Matsuura korosti lukutaidon olevan yksi kehityksen tärkeimmistä välineistä, joka kehittää koko yhteiskuntaa.
