02/27/2008 At least five Nepali gays will contest elections for the Constituent Assembly, scheduled to be held this April, to take up the issue of discrimination against their community. In a nation that treats homosexuality as illegal and immoral, this is an attempt to fight exclusion.

02/26/2008 "Un flagello globale che affligge un terzo della popolazione femminile nel mondo": così l'Onu ha definito la violenza verso donne e bambine lanciando la campagna "Say No to Violence against Women". "Si tratta di una campagna per le donne e le ragazze che hanno il diritto di vivere libere dalla violenza, oggi e in futuro" - ha detto il Segretario Generale dell'Onu Ban Ki-moon. "Almeno una donna su tre rischia di essere picchiata, costretta al sesso o abusata in vario modo nella sua vita. Attraverso la pratica della selezione prenatale del sesso, a moltissime altre è persino negato il diritto di esistere" - ha aggiunto Ban Ki-moon. La violenza contro le donne ostacola la crescita economica e sociale e la nuova campagna si svolgerà fino al 2015.

02/21/2008 Insufficient statistics and lack of a sound HIV/AIDS prevention policy are undermining Bangladesh’s efforts to protect people against its risks. It is necessary to break the barriers of social stigmas attached to the disease and promote condom use beyond family planning purposes, say health experts.

02/19/2008 In a step taken to protect rights of sexual minorities, the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India has announced the establishment of a welfare board for transgenders. The move followed a public hearing by NGOs on the plight of the community and recommendations by a citizens’ jury.
