All’indomani della rielezione per un quarto mandato con oltre il 94% dei voti, Amnesty International ha chiesto al presidente tunisino Ben Ali di porre fine alle violazioni dei diritti umani che hanno pervaso il paese per più di dieci anni. Negli ultimi tempi Amnesty ha ricevuto denunce di attacchi nei confronti di oppositori politici e persone che osano criticare il governo mentre Human Rights Watch denuncia la condizione dei detenuti politici: sevizie, detenzione in isolamento senza sosta, malnutrizione, violenze e torture.
