Stasera 300 città del mondo illuminano i propri monumenti-simbolo per dire no alla pena di morte. Lanciata nel 2002 dalla Comunità Sant'Egidio in accordo con tutti gli organismi mondiali attivi nel settore, la Giornata Internazionale delle Città contro la Pena di Morte vede quest'anno l'adesione del Presidente del Messico che ha proposto una iniziativa di riforma Costituzionale per sopprimere in modo definitivo la pena di morte nel Paese. Sono tuttora 63 i Paesi che prevedono la pena di morte (erano 66 nel 2002) mentre le esecuzioni sono aumentate passando dalle 4101 del 2002 alle 5599 dello scorso anno. In cima alla lista Cina, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam e Stati Uniti.

Police chiefs, with support from federal officials, must conduct a rigorous, independent and impartial study of the impact and use of tasers before they are implicated in more deaths, says Amnesty International in a new study released today. There is a rising number of deaths in custody, nine in Canada in the last fifteen months and over 60 in the United States in the last three years, after use of the weapon.

Rwanda's Godeliève Mukasarasi, winner of Rights & Democracy's 2004 John Humphrey Freedom Award, arrived on the weekend to visit Halifax, Moncton, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. The presentation ceremony takes place on the eve of International Human Rights Day. A survivor of the 1994 genocide, Ms. Mukasarasi has gone on to make an invaluable contribution to the promotion of human rights and democratic development in Rwanda.

Human rights and humanitarian groups are calling for a full-scale investigation into the death of an 81-year-old Haitian pastor taken into custody by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after requesting asylum. While Cuban asylum-seekers are usually released to relatives, Haitians are automatically detained and usually sent back, despite increasing political turmoil and violence in their country.
