Families of Iraqi civilians allegedly killed by British troops have begun a legal battle with implications for future military operations in foreign countries. Lawyers for the families argued that the soldiers' actions in Iraq are covered by the Human Rights Act and that an independent inquiry must be set up to decide whether the killings were unlawful.

La Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos emitió su sentencia en un caso contra Colombia, que involucra la desaparición forzada de 19 comerciantes en la región de Magdalena Medio durante octubre de 1987. Este alto tribunal determinó por unanimidad que el Estado colombiano violó los derechos a la libertad personal, a la integridad personal y a la vida de todas las personas que hasta ahora se encuentran desaparecidas.

A panel debate to launch the latest report from Minority Rights Group International, Gender, Minorities and Indigenous Peoples takes place on Thursday 5 August, from 5.30-7.30 pm, at the Hancock Room, Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Russell Square. The report considers whether rights and gender law, and practitioners, are doing enough to protect the rights of minority and indigenous women experiencing multiple discrimination.

The proposals centre on ensuring that protection is granted to those whose safety would be at risk if they were returned to their country of origin.

The government of Zimbabwe plans to ban international human rights groups from the country and cut foreign funding to local organizations that promote human rights, according to a draft bill. Zimbabwe has long accused aid organizations of interfering in its internal affairs and has made repeated threats to restrict their activities.

A Ukrainian aged 31 was found hanged in Harmondsworth detention centre on 19 July. His death sparked a night of disturbances at the centre and has led to all of the detainees being transferred to prisons and other detention centres. At least 10 asylum seekers and foreign nationals have died by their own hand in detention or prison since 2000.

La Sezione Italiana di Amnesty International ha lanciato oggi un appello al leader libico Gheddafi chiedendo che non venga eseguita la condanna a morte nei confronti di sei operatori sanitari stranieri, cinque bulgari e un palestinese, accusati di aver contagiato 426 bambini con il virus dell’HIV mentre lavoravano all’Ospedale Pediatrico al-Fateh di Benghazi. I sei - Kristiana Malinova Valcheva, Nasya Stojcheva Nenova, Valentina Manolova Siropulo, Valya Georgieva Chervenyashka, Snezhanka Ivanova Dimitrova e Ashraf Ahmad Jum'a - si dichiarano innocenti e hanno riferito di essere stati torturati allo scopo di estorcere loro delle confessioni.
