Se Microsoft non si adeguasse entro la fine di luglio 2006, la multa giornaliera potrebbe essere raddoppiata. Queste multe sono una reazione alla mancanza continuata di adeguamento di Microsoft alla decisione della Commissione Europea di rendere le informazioni per l'interoperabilità disponibili ai concorrenti come precondizione necessaria per permettere un'equa concorrenza. "Microsoft è ancora lontana dal permettere la concorrenza tanto quanto lo era il giorno della decisione iniziale della Commissione nel 2004. Tutte le proposte fatte da Microsoft escludono deliberatamente Samba, il principale concorrente ancora rimasto.
