Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) accoglie favorevolmente la decisione della Commissione Europea di comminare a Microsoft una multa di 1.5 milioni di euro al giorno retroattivamente dal 16 dicembre 2005, in totale 280.5 milioni di euro. Se Microsoft non si adeguasse entro la fine di luglio 2006, la multa giornaliera potrebbe essere raddoppiata. Queste multe sono una reazione alla mancanza continuata di adeguamento di Microsoft alla decisione della Commissione Europea di rendere le informazioni per l'interoperabilitą disponibili ai concorrenti come precondizione necessaria per permettere un'equa concorrenza. "Microsoft č ancora lontana dal permettere la concorrenza tanto quanto lo era il giorno della decisione iniziale della Commissione nel 2004. Tutte le proposte fatte da Microsoft escludono deliberatamente Samba, il principale concorrente ancora rimasto. Sotto questa luce, le multe non sembrano essere né premature, né troppo elevate" - ha commentato Carlo Piana, avvocato milanese della FSFE.
