09/29/2007 India’s first Local Area Portal (LAP) on a parliamentary constituency has been launched by Digital Empowerment Foundation. The idea is to make all data – social, cultural, historical – available to its citizens, including announcements from the local MPs and MLAs. The LAP project plans to represent every electorate cluster in the country.

09/29/2007 The southern state of Karnataka in India has set up E-Halli centres – an e-governance initiative to provide important information and services in rural areas. The centres will operate from the panchayat premises and will charge a small annual fee.

09/21/2007 Mainstreet Technologies threw its hat in the ring this week to be the first to complete an African west coast fibre project to compete with SAT3. The cable will connect 12 countries, some already connected to SAT3, others not. Russell Southwood spoke to the project’s CEO Funke Opeke and discovered how it intends to win the race to complete.

Microsoft sotto processo Ue
09/17/2007 Il Tribunale di primo grado della Corte di giustizia europea ha respinto l'appello presentato dalla Microsoft contro la multa di 497 milioni di euro inflittale nel marzo 2004 dalla Commissione Ue per violazione delle norme antitrust. La contestazione riguardava in particolare la vendita di Windows insieme con Media Player, mossa ritenuta in grado di danneggiare gli altri produttori di software. La Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) e il Samba Team accolgono la decisione del Tribunale come "una pietra miliare per la concorrenza". "Speriamo di poter finalmente competere su un campo regolare senza che ci siano precluse le informazioni necessarie all'interoperabilità" - afferma il comunicato delle due associazioni. Il Tribunale ha invece annullato parzialmente la decisione, in merito alla nomina di un esperto indipendente incaricato di sorvegliare il rispetto della decisione.
