04/09/2008 Nepal has sealed its border with India ahead of polling for security reasons. At least 20 people are reported to have died in election-related violence, including yesterday’s killing of a candidate from a prominent party. Final preparations are on with poll officials reaching 21,000 polling stations dotting the country.

04/08/2008 Cadres of Maoists and other political parties in Nepal continued to clash with each other until the last day of campaigning. Over 200 poll-related incidents of violence in the last one month have been recorded. It is now to be seen how peacefully the elections take place on April 10.

04/07/2008 Campaign is in full swing for the historic April 10 Constituent Assembly polls in Nepal. In its final assessment report, the UN has urged political groups to refrain from violent and intimidating tactics. The report also says that there have been attempts to buy votes using state resources.

02/26/2008 La Federazione Internazionale Terre des Hommes (TDHIF) ha presentato oggi a Bruxelles uno studio sulla responsabilità etica dei Paesi riceventi le adozioni internazionali che confronta le leggi e le procedure di sei Paesi europei: Italia, Francia, Germania, Norvegia, Spagna e Svizzera. In Italia si è passati dai 346 minori stranieri adottati del 2000 ai 2.840 del 2005, l'incremento più elevato tra i 6 Paesi esaminati nello studio. Terre des Hommes chiede alla Commissione Europea di salvaguardare i diritti del bambino adottato e dei genitori adottivi incoraggiando tutti gli stati membri dell'UE a partecipare a un "Codice di buone pratiche".

Microsoft sotto processo Ue
09/17/2007 Il Tribunale di primo grado della Corte di giustizia europea ha respinto l'appello presentato dalla Microsoft contro la multa di 497 milioni di euro inflittale nel marzo 2004 dalla Commissione Ue per violazione delle norme antitrust. La contestazione riguardava in particolare la vendita di Windows insieme con Media Player, mossa ritenuta in grado di danneggiare gli altri produttori di software. La Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) e il Samba Team accolgono la decisione del Tribunale come "una pietra miliare per la concorrenza". "Speriamo di poter finalmente competere su un campo regolare senza che ci siano precluse le informazioni necessarie all'interoperabilità" - afferma il comunicato delle due associazioni. Il Tribunale ha invece annullato parzialmente la decisione, in merito alla nomina di un esperto indipendente incaricato di sorvegliare il rispetto della decisione.
