10/31/2007 "Da un'Europa sconvolta dai recenti conflitti nei Balcani ad un Europa che, valorizzando etnie, lingue e religioni, sappia cogliere le tante opportunità anche attraverso l'allargamento dell'Unione". E' questo l'appello che è emerso dalle relatrici alla Conferenza internazionale promossa venerdì scorso a Bolzano dalla World Social Agenda nell'ambito della manifestazione "Libera Europa–Freies Europa". La conferenza ha concluso il ciclo di riflessione quadriennale sui continenti nei quali donne dell'Africa, America Latina, dell'Asia, dell’Europa dell’Est e dei Balcani hanno presentato le loro attività e la loro visione di un mondo "diverso, multiplo, mescolato". Dal prossimo anno, la World Social Agenda proporrà percorsi, dibattiti e eventi a Padova, Trento e Bolzano sugli "Obiettivi del Millennio" proposti dall'Onu.

10/30/2007 British MPs pledge not to forget Burma, via a YouTube video.
And following performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, OId Vic and Soho Theatre, the dramatised story of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, The Lady Of Burma, comes to London's Riverside Studios from 7 November.

10/24/2007 Nel giorno in cui le Nazioni Unite celebrano il loro 62° anniversario, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leader della Lega nazionale per la democrazia, è entrata nel suo 12° anno di arresti domiciliari. Per l'occasione, Amnesty International ha nuovamente chiesto al governo di Myanmar/Birmania di rilasciare immediatamente le migliaia di persone arrestate per aver preso parte alle più recenti manifestazioni pacifiche, così come tutti i prigionieri di coscienza in carcere da anni, tra cui la stessa Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. “La premio Nobel per la pace è il simbolo della resistenza politica di Myanmar: il suo rilascio rappresenterebbe un importante segnale positivo” – ha dichiarato Irene Khan, Segretaria generale di Amnesty International.

Myanmar: monaci buddisti durante le manifestazioni
10/02/2007 Dopo aver chiesto al Consiglio di sicurezza dell'Onu di imporre immediatamente "un embargo totale e obbligatorio sulle armi a Myanmar", Amnesty International ha sollecitato oggi il Consiglio Onu dei diritti umani a pretendere dal governo di Myanmar il rilascio di tutte le persone arrestate nel corso delle manifestazioni pacifiche degli ultimi giorni. Secondo Amnesty il rischio che i manifestanti arrestati subiscano torture è elevato data la persistenza di questo fenomeno da decenni accompagnato dall’impunità più totale. Sarebbero almeno 700 i monaci e 500 le persone arrestate in tutto il paese. Prosegue intanto la raccolta di firme per l’appello per la scarcerazione dei manifestanti arrestati nei giorni scorsi e domani, mercoledì 3 ottobre, si terrà a Napoli una nuova manifestazione di Amnesty International.
