Critica l'Associazione Obiettori Nonviolenti che definisce il provvedimento ''assurdo'' e viola l'articolo 51 della Costituzione. Intanto l'Associazione italiana assistenza vittime arruolati nelle forze armate (Anavafaf) chiede a Ciampi di intervenire sul caso dei militari italiani esposti all'uranio: il 15 settembre la commissione Difesa del Senato voterà per l'istituzione della Commissione d'inchiesta parlamentare sull'uranio impoverito.

In an apparently self-contradictory move, the U.S. military this week conferred “protected status” on members of an Iranian armed group that is listed as foreign terrorist organization by U.S. authorities. With this new status, members of the People’s Mujahideen (Mujahedin-e Khalq) cannot be extradited from their current base in Iraq to face trial in Iran and are protected by the Fourth Geneva Convention.

07/30/2004 The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced the commencement of formal investigation into war crimes in Uganda this week. The investigation, prompted by a request from the government of Uganda, will look at the conduct of both rebel and government forces in the 18-year conflict in the northern part of the country.

They are attempting to emulate their neighbours in Fallujah, where the US Marines have essentially abandoned the town to the insurgents.

07/28/2004 With "outrage and bitterness," Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is closing all its medical programs in Afghanistan. Today's decision follows the June 2 killing of five MSF workers in a deliberate attack. Given the government's failure to respond, the group says it cannot assure the safety of its volunteers. MSF has delivered humanitarian medical assistance in Afghanistan since 1980.
