Preoccupazione delle Reti di associazioni impegnate sui temi del controllo del commercio di armi e disarmo nucleare per le proposte degli Stati Uniti comunicate dall'Ambasciatore Usa presso le Nazioni Unite, John Bolton, alla vigilia del Vertice dei Capi di Stato dei paesi membri dell'Onu (14-16 settembre). L'Amministrazione Usa chiede modifiche che, se accettate, svuoterebbero di contenuto il documento finale. Tra queste, l'eliminazione dal documento di tutti i riferimenti: all'obbligo degli Stati al disarmo nucleare; al CTBT (trattato per la messa al bando delle sperimentazioni nucleari); all'FMCT (trattato sui materiali fissili) e tutti i riferimenti all'estensione delle Zone libere da armi nucleari. Gli Usa chiedono inoltre che vengano tagliati gli unici due brani del documento che si riferiscono alla regolamentazione delle armi leggere. "Abolition 2000" (la Coalizione mondiale per la messa al bando delle armi nucleari) e Iansa (la Rete internazionale per la regolamentazione delle armi leggere) lanciano un appello pressante ai governi affinché rifiutino le richieste dell'Amministrazione Usa.

Resolution 73 of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) resolved to instruct the ITU Secretary-General to place the question of the holding of a World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) on the agenda of the United Nations Administrative Committee on Coordination (ACC, now the United Nations System Chief Executive Board - CEB) and to report to the ITU governing body, the Council, on the results of that consultation.

In un rapporto sulla situazione del Darfur inviato al Consiglio di sicurezza delle Nazioni Unite, il Segretario generale dell'Onu Kofi Annan ha criticato l'atteggiamento dei ribelli che stanno favorendo una "criminalità senza precedenti", situazione aggravata dalla contemporanea "scarsa opposizione ai crescenti episodi di banditismo e violenza". Oltre a chiedere maggior impegno dei capi ribelli per favorire il processo di pace, Annan ha criticato anche il governo sudanese, colpevole di non aver preso provvedimenti contro i predoni arabi Janjaweed e di non aver denunciato alla giustizia i responsabili degli atti di violenza nel Darfur. Intanto proseguono gli scontri tra i ribelli del Justice and Equality Movement (Jem) e quelli del Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (Sla/m). Lunedì prossimo, l’Alto Commissario delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati, António Guterres, partirà per una missione di dieci giorni nella regione. E per il 24 di agosto è fissato un nuovo round di consultazioni tra i gruppi del Jem e dello Sla/m e le autorità di Khartuom.

La marcia Perugia-Assisi, in programma per l'11 settembre, è preceduta dalla 6a Assemblea dell'Onu dei Popoli e dalla 2a Assemblea dei Giovani per l'Onu dei Popoli che si svolgeranno rispettivamente a Perugia e a Terni dall'8 al 10 settembre. Prima e dopo la marcia si terranno in tutta Italia centinaia di iniziative, incontri e dibattiti. Per realizzare questo progetto, la Tavola della Pace presenta "dieci cose da fare" subito: dalla delibera da far approvare agli Enti locali alla diffusione dello spot per le radio e le televisioni locali, dalla richiesta dello "zaino solidale" alla adesione al progetto "La mia scuola per la pace". E a Perugia il 7 settembre per gli operatori della comunicazione c'è in programma l'incontro "Per un'informazione e una comunicazione di pace". La marcia precede di qualche giorno il più importante incontro delle Nazioni Unite del 2005 che sarà dedicato alla lotta alla povertà e alla riforma dell'Onu.
