In his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh called for strengthening efforts at both national and international levels for "taking us closer to the development targets set in the Millennium declaration five years ago." Expressing his disappointment over the failure of the Outcome Document adopted at the world leaders' summit to address major concerns of the developing world, he also called for making the process of globalization "fairer and more equitable."

Meeting at the UN headquarters in New York last week were 191 heads of state and delegates, the largest-ever gathering of world leaders. Initially the World Summit was set to review the status of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), five years on from their origin and ten years from completion.With progress in achieving the goals wildly off-track, was much anticipation and hope resting on this summit to move previous commitments forward.

Condannati a morire di fame, sete, malattie, guerre, tempeste o uragani. Sono le decine di milioni di bambini, di donne e di uomini che, per primi, pagheranno il costo del fallimento del vertice delle Nazioni Unite della scorsa settimana. Decine di milioni di persone, non numeri. Gente, non mosche, con un volto e con un nome, di pelle chiara e di pelle scura, di diversa età. A loro, i 153 capi di stato e di governo che si sono riuniti a New York per il vertice più grande della storia, hanno consegnato una sentenza di condanna. Non ci sarà una Onu più forte in grado di salvarli e di proteggerli. Non ci sarà una Onu più democratica e partecipata in grado di ascoltare e rispondere alla loro disperata domanda di giustizia. Non ci saranno Caschi Blu a prevenire i prossimi massacri e genocidi. L'attacco all'Onu sferrato dal Presidente degli Stati Uniti e condotto in prima persona dal suo neoambasciatore, John Bolton, è riuscito a far saltare anche la modesta bozza di risoluzione finale prodotta dopo un anno di negoziati intergovernativi. Tutti i tentativi di ricondurre gli Stati Uniti a ragionevolezza sono andati a vuoto.
