04/28/2007 Riparte con una consultazione popolare la Campagna ControlArms per un Trattato internazionale sul commercio di armi. Dopo la risoluzione adottata dal Primo Comitato dell’Assemblea generale dell’Onu e poi confermata da uno schiacciante voto favorevole in Assemblea a lo scorso dicembre, nel corso del 2007 il Segretario generale delle Nazioni Unite dovrà verificare il parere dei governi su “fattibilità, ambito di competenze e parametri” del futuro Trattato sul commercio di armi. Nel 2008 verrà inoltre formato un gruppo di esperti governativi (GGE) che sarà chiamato a porre le basi del futuro trattato e a riferirne nel corso dell’Assemblea generale dello stesso anno. Per mantenere viva l’attenzione e la pressione sui governi, la campagna Control Arms ha deciso di attivare una nuova fase di mobilitazione: la People’s Consultation sul Trattato, una consultazione popolare per fare pressione sui governi affinché rispondano in linea con le richieste della campagna.

Vertice dei popoli indigeni dell'America Latina
04/20/2007 Alla vigilia del Vertice dei popoli indigeni del Abya Yala (continente americano), che ha esaminato la situazione dei diritti dei popoli indigeni, il Rapporto annuale del Relatore Onu sui Diritti dei popoli indigeni, denuncia "il genocidio su piccola scala" in atto contro i popoli indigeni. "Esecuzioni extragiudiziali, scomparse violente, torture, detenzioni arbitrarie, minacce, molte delle quali avvengono nel quadro della difesa che le comunità e le organizzazioni indigene fanno dei propri territori, delle risorse naturali e dei territori ancestrali", indicando proprio il Guatemala come il paese con il più alto indice di uccisioni e la rincorsa alle risorse naturali da parte delle multinazionali del petrolio, dei minerali, del legname e delle risorse idriche come la causa prima - segnala l'Associazione per i popoli minacciati.

04/09/2007 Reacting to the IPCC report on climate change, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the impacts of climate change are increasingly noticeable, and likely to become more so in the future as extreme weather events intensify. He also urged countries to work on mitigating the worst effects of climate change.
