Global warming could impact one billion people, warned Rajendra K. Pachauri of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the opening of the largest-ever gathering of world leaders on climate change. Heads of states, top officials, civil society and business leaders from over 150 nations attended the high-level meeting on 24 September.

In Myanmar, dopo che migliaia di monaci birmani hanno sfidato stamane i pesanti avvertimenti della giunta militare iniziando un nuovo giorno di marcia nonviolenta contro la giunta militare e per la democrazia, si susseguono i timori di un intervento repressivo. Amnesty International chiede al governo di garantire lo svolgimento delle manifestazioni pacifiche e denuncia la situazione di sostanziale negazione dei fondamentali diritti umani che prosegue da molti anni in Myanmar. Secondo l'Associazione per i Popoli Minacciati (APM), le massicce proteste dei monaci buddisti si stanno ora diffondendo anche in regioni e stati a prevalenza cristiana come lo Stato federale settentrionale di Kachin. Oggi camion militari hanno percorso la città con altoparlanti minacciando misure repressive contro chi oserà ancora manifestare.

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 13 (OneWorld) - Despite strong objections from the United States and some of its allies, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution Thursday calling for the recognition of the world's 370 million indigenous peoples' right to self-determination and control over their lands and resources.

Dopo ventidue anni di negoziati e accesi dibattiti, l’Assemblea Generale dell'Onu ha approvato ieri la Dichiarazione dei diritti dei popoli indigeni, un documento non vincolante che mira proteggere i diritti di circa 370 milioni di appartenenti ai popoli indigeni nel mondo. Hanno votato a favore 143 nazioni, 11 si sono astenute e quattro - Australia, Nuova Zelanda, Canada e Stati Uniti - hanno votato contro. Celebrano le associazioni per la difesa dei diritti delle popolazioni autoctone: "Tripudio per l'approvazione" - commenta Survival International riportando i commenti di diverse popolazioni indigene del mondo. "Un passo storico" - afferma l'Associazione per i popoli minacciati (APM). La dichiarazione sancisce i diritti dei popoli indigeni alla proprietà della loro terra e a vivere come desiderano e afferma, inoltre, che non possono essere sfrattati dai loro territori senza il loro libero e informato consenso.

Amid growing concern over the slow pace of international negotiations, the United Nations has called an extraordinary meeting of world leaders to discuss climate change. Considering that climate change has enormous implications for the world economy and international development, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has invited all the heads of state to come to New York to attend the high-level conference.
