West African neighbors Benin and Nigeria agreed last week to unite efforts to prevent and suppress human trafficking, particularly of women and children. With cross-border trafficking into Nigeria rising, the countries further pledged to protect, rehabilitate, and return trafficking victims to their homes.

Local people interested in learning computers are turning up at the new community multimedia centre in a neighbourhood in Benin. The UNESCO-supported telecentre does not have its own community radio station yet but has linked up with a nearby FM station for an hour’s broadcasting every day.

Vaikka Benin on poliittisesti melko vakaa maa, köyhyys nakertaa hyvinvointia. Lasten lähettäminen sukulaisten luo kaupunkiin kotiapulaiseksi on pitkään ollut tavallinen ja kunniallinen tapa. Viime vuosina järjestely on kuitenkin muuttunut irvikuvakseen ja lasten myyminen orjatyövoimaksi on paisunut ase- ja huumekauppaan verrattavaksi bisnekseksi.

Keväällä 2004 päättynyt koulujen kaksivuotinen Nepal-kampanja tuotti 1,2 miljoonaa euroa tyttöjen koulutukseen. Unicef-kävelyyn osallistui vuosittain 80 000 oppilasta 400 koulusta ympäri maata. Nyt alkavissa Unicef-kävelyissä kerätään varoja pieneen ranskankieliseen Beniniin. Kahden seuraavan vuoden aikana Suomen koululaiset antavat tuntuvan panoksensa Beninin lapsikaupan ja lapsityön vastaisiin ohjelmiin.

Rosine Mahinou, a mother of seven never thought she would send her girls to school. But that was five years ago. Today, Ms. Mahinou has enrolled all of her girls in school along with her boys. This sea change in her attitude is largely due to a programme promoting girls’ education called Education and Community, in her village in Benin.

Barely two weeks after 116 children were returned to neighbouring Benin, another set of 120 children kidnapped from that country have been rescued by the Nigerian police. The children were victims of child trafficking and forced child labour, according to the police.

Hokkanen on mukana ohjelmassa, jonka tavoitteena on demokraattisen hallinnon vahvistaminen. Käytännössä tämä merkitsee erityisesti parlamentin aseman tukemista.

Children who eat foods contaminated with aflatoxins, a toxic by-product that grows on crops, show stunted growth similar to malnutrition. Aflatoxins grow when crops are stored in hot and humid conditions.
