L'incessante violenza in Iraq sta costringendo l'Alto Commissario per i Rifugiati dell'Onu (Unhcr) ad una "profonda revisione" del proprio programma di lavoro per affrontare i bisogni umanitari nella regione: mentre l'Unhcr si era precedentemente concentrato sul ritorno dei rifugiati, l'incessante violenza nel Paese implicherà la prosecuzione degli esodi interni ed esterni che colpiscono la regione circostante. L'Unhcr stima che 1,7 milioni di iracheni si trovino attualmente nella condizione di sfollati interni, mentre circa 2 milioni di persone sono fuggite nei paesi limitrofi. E sempre l'Unhcr comunica che numerosi cittadini iracheni stanno cercando rifugio fuori della regione geografica interessata arrivando anche in Europa e raccomanda ai governi che ai richiedenti asilo iracheni provenienti dal sud e dal centro del paese venga accordato lo status di rifugiato ai sensi della Convenzione sui Rifugiati del 1951.
