Nepal's oldest community radio station was shut down by government officials Sunday, and many other stations have switched to broadcasting "soft news." The move is making it difficult for the country's illiterate population to get news about last week's key agreement between Maoist rebels and the country's political parties, to which the king has not yet responded.

The Supreme Court Tuesday issued shoe cause notice to the government asking it to furnish in written why they issued the code of conduct for NGOs. The single bench of justice Top Bahadur Magar has given an ultimatum of 15 days for the government to do so.

Nepal's Maoist rebels have reached an agreement with seven political parties to work together to abolish the monarchy and restore democracy. They hope to form an alliance against King Gyanendra, who sacked the government and seized power in February. However the rebels must lay down their arms for the agreement to take place.

A record made available by the Kathmandu District Court shows that a total of 597 cases were registered in Kathmandu district in the year 2003/04, out of which 198 cases are yet to be decided. The number of divorce cases filed at the district court the previous year was 560 of which 351 cases were decided. Neetu Dubey reports for NepalNews.Com.
