Dalla reintroduzione della pena capitale nel 1982 soltanto in questo Stato americano sono state eseguite 342 condanne. E, sempre dal Texas, arriva il pressante appello di Irene Rekitzke, madre di Richard Cartwright, un detenuto del braccio della morte che il prossimo 19 maggio verrà giustiziato.

Jemenin väestö kasvaa vuodessa noin kolmella prosentilla, todettiin joulukuisessa väestölaskennassa. Vauhti on hidastunut hieman, sillä edellisen väestölaskennan tuloksena, vuonna 1994 kasvuksi arvioitiin noin neljää prosenttia. Nykyinenkin kasvuvauhti on kestämätöntä ja puolet väestöstä elää jo nyt köyhyysrajan alapuolella. Pääkaupunki Sana´a kasvaa jopa yhdeksän prosentin vuosivauhdilla.

Väestönkasvu on yli kolme prosenttia vuodessa ja lapsien määrä naista kohti yli kuusi.
