08/22/2006 850 famiglie - per un totale di 15 villaggi distrutti - hanno perso le loro case insieme a ogni proprietà a causa dell'inizio del riempimento del bacino di raccolta della diga di Merowe, avvenuto senza alcun preavviso. Altri 10 villaggi rischiano di essere le prossime vittime e l'incaricata speciale dell'ONU per i Diritti Umani, Sima Samar, in visita a Khartoum, ha espresso la sua preoccupazione. L'Associazione per i Popoli Minacciati chiede il risarcimento per le vittime alla ditta tedesca Lahmeyer International.
