Leading human rights advocates lashed into Uzbek leader Islam Karimov this weekend for his government's refusal to allow civil society groups to hold a conference on the death penalty, highlighting the repressive leader's treatment of all real and potential opposition. Karimov is currently seen by Washington as a close "strategic ally."
