OneWorld U.S. Editorial Internship

Want to Make a Difference and Get Published?
Help Communicate Global Issues to the American Public

If you are web-savvy, enjoy writing, and are interested in NGOs and international issues, apply to work as an Editorial Intern with OneWorld U.S. You will work with our Managing Editor to find stories from our global network of over 1,600 organizations working in human rights and sustainable development. This is an unpaid internship with at least a 20 hour per week commitment for a minimum of three months. To apply, please send a writing sample and resume to useditors@oneworld.net.

Specific Responsibilities:

- In coordination with the Managing Editor, intern(s) will select stories from OneWorld partner organizations’ websites and write summaries (or “blurbs”) for review and possible publication. Intern(s) will learn the criteria for story selection as well as the skills to publish a well-rounded and comprehensive daily summary of global issues.

- Intern(s) may also work with OneWorld’s magazine editor on specific tasks related to the publication of OneWorld’s monthly e-zine. Specific tasks may include:
> Researching the selected topic;
> Researching national, international, multilateral and bilateral agreements/policies on the topic;
> Researching background information/historiography, campaigns, and action alerts from different organizations and various sectors of the global community;
> Researching and contacting journalists and U.S. policymakers with a particular interest in the issue.

- Intern(s) may also have the opportunity (depending on level of interest and journalistic skills) to attend local events (press conferences, rallies, etc.) and write articles on the proceedings to be published on OneWorld’s Yahoo! world news service.

Intern(s) should be highly motivated—especially concerning global issues in the fields of sustainable development and human rights—with exceptional writing skills. A journalistic background is preferred but not required. Intern(s) must have the ability to stay focused while working independently and be able to work remotely (from home or other location) while staying in touch with OneWorld staff (many of whom also work remotely). Intern(s) must be able to meet deadlines both on a daily and longer-term basis.

Duration: Flexible, with a minimum three month commitment

Hours per week: Flexible, with a minimum 20-hour per week commitment

Compensation & Benefits: This is a great opportunity for interns to acquire editorial experience, possible publication, increased awareness of the NGO community and international issues, and the satisfaction of contributing to a global dialogue while raising issues often overlooked or distorted by the mainstream U.S. media. The internship is unpaid. OneWorld will be happy to assist interns in obtaining academic credit.

Location and logistics: Much of the work can be done remotely (at home or other location) with regular email and phone contact and monthly face-to-face meetings with team members. The intern may also be asked to participate in weekly team meetings.
