Nepal: Urban Violence, Rural Calm

Over the last two weeks, Nepalese security forces have arrested over 1,500 people, including political leaders, teachers and students, in mass protests in Kathmandu. Similar scenes of arrests and violence have recurred daily in the Nepali capital as political parties and their student supporters hold their most sustained protests yet. According to reports from the Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP), an AP partner, protesters are calling for a multi-party democracy that will reinstate political leaders in the country.
