Here are some points to ponder on disaster mitigation efforts:
  • Why do you think the mainstream media focuses on some disasters and not on others?
  • How much control do you think humanity has over natural disasters?
  • Increasing urban risks make people living in cities, especially in the developing world, more vulnerable to disasters. Is the international community doing enough to address this problem?
  • Having insurance helps people recover from disasters. How should such coverage be provided to the poor and by whom?
  • Many commentators cited a failure of coordination and communication among U.S. responders in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Why do you think this happened?
  • There are many good examples of disaster preparedness (see “Programs that Work”); how can governments be encouraged to make these investments?
  • How might coalitions dealing with disaster mitigation be strengthened?

OneWorld U.S. thanks you for your time, interest, and commitment!
