On Christmas Eve, 2005, the Asia America Initiative, in partnership with the US-based Muslim Women's Coalition, organized and coordinated the delivery of an Inter-Faith $1.25M USD emergency medicinal relief airlift to the earthquake devastated area of Pakistan. There are some 3 million men, women and children without shelter and in desperate need of medical care in the Himalayan Mountains of Pakistan's Northwest Province and Kashmir. Surgeon Dr. Waheed Akbar of Pakistani-Americans Physicians Association in coordination with the Pakistan Red Crescent Society are overseeing the distribution of the medicines through the Ayub Medical College Disaster Relief Center in Abbotobad.
The earthquake area of Pakistan has traditionally suffered from endemic poverty and violence. At at time when the United States has also suffered from natural disasters, the medical relief mission is an effort to alleviate suffering and to show friendship and solidarity with the people of Pakistan.
