Finally, a Concrete Proposal to Defeat Genocide

Peter Gantz's article suggesting a NATO force to arrest the Darfur genocide is one of the few concrete suggestions for actually defeating genocide. Sadly, the UN seems incapable of mounting such a force. It was NATO that finally stopped the Bosnian atrocities and a similar military action should be used in Sudan.

As Mr. Gantz suggests, such a force should be "on call," legitimized by some form of international sanction, to be dispatched under specified conditions which transcend national sovereignty.

Transmit this proposal to N. Kristof (NY Times) who is the most persistent agitator for Darfur in the media, and to others (Jan Egeland, UN; Samantha Power, Harvard Kennedy School; John Prendergast, International Crisis Group) who may help to formulate a plan to promote a permanent force to intervene when genocide occurs.
