Get Involved with OneWorld Partners! Global Health Council A unique page at the site of the Global Health Council lets you see how your American community rates in comparison with countries in the developing world against such indicators as population, life expectancy, immunization, and maternal and infant deaths. If these discrepancies bother you and you want to fight for better health policies, the Council’s Advocacy Center can help you to search past and current legislative efforts relevant to global health and alert you to key initiatives that need support. International Women’s Health Coalition Visit the International Women’s Health Coalition to find out how you can work for the health and rights of women and girls everywhere. Their Take Action Now page features ten steps that you can take to become a health and rights advocate. Find out more about the 34 Million Friends Campaign or Mother’s Promise petition, as well as donation and legislative information. Global Justice The Student Campaign for Child Survival, a project of Global Justice, mobilizes students in support of children’s health. Their GlobaLocal page features dozens of suggestions on fundraising, projects you can support, and creative ways to take action in your local community. Hesperian Foundation The Hesperian Foundation publishes books on community-based healthcare that are designed to reach people all over the world. Visit their get involved page for information on everything from hosting an awareness- and fund-raising house party to collaborating on books currently in progress at the Foundation. Global Giving Global Giving’s online marketplace connects donors with grassroots actions around the world, including health-related projects. A donation of as little as $10 can protect five children from blindness caused by vitamin A deficiencies, while $20 pays for early detection of HIV status in babies born to infected mothers. You can also give on behalf of others or create a registry through their gifts page. CORE Group The CORE Group, an international coalition of non-governmental organizations, works to promote the health of women and children all over the world. Support Other Non-Profit Initiatives The Call to Stop TB The “Global Plan to Stop TB” aims to raise awareness about tuberculosis and implement changes that will create a world free of TB. Voice your support for the plan, as an organization or an individual, by signing “The Call to Stop TB.” After signing, why not send the call on to a friend, or watch a short film about the Global Plan? “Nothing But Nets” Insecticide-treated bed nets are one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to prevent the spread of malaria. Help make them more widely available to African families by supporting the “Nothing but Nets” campaign, as described in a Sports Illustrated article. Make your donation today through the UN Foundation’s Web site. Doctors Without Borders Find out how you can volunteer, whether in the field or the office, for Doctors Without Borders, an organization dedicated to providing medical aid to all those in need. You can also check out their youth-oriented Public Education Projects, including the Bracelet of Life Campaign to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition. If you live in New York, Georgia, or Tennessee, try experiencing a “Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City” in the fall of 2006. Rotary International Find out more about Rotary International’s PolioPlus program, which works to eradicate polio around the world. Contact your local Rotary chapter to arrange a presentation on polio eradication for your community by the PolioPlus Partners task force, a team of knowledgeable Rotarians. U.S. Coalition for Child Survival The U.S. Coalition for Child Survival is a network of organizations that supports health care for all children across the world. Their get involved page shares some ideas about how you can become an advocate for child survival, including participation in some of their working groups. Rx for Survival The Rx for Survival project uses television programming, a Web site, and community activities to help raise awareness about global health. More specifically, their Rx for Child Survival Campaign offers a wide range of suggestions on ways that you can volunteer your time, spread the word, or speak out for child survival. Their Global Health Calendar will also keep you up-to-date on local events. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria is committed to aggressive interventions against all three of these diseases. Act now to support their work, which provides grants to help countries, organizations, and communities fight these killers.
