Press Iran to Release Iranian-American Scholar
|
Dear feminist activist,
I write you today with an urgent request: demand the immediate release of renowned Iranian-American scholar Dr. Haleh Esfandiari, who is imprisoned in Iran's notorious Evin prison, a location infamous for the torture and detention of political prisoners. Today marks the 100th day of Esfandiari's imprisonment. Please join feminists and human rights activists worldwide today to send an urgent message demanding the immediate release of Haleh Esfandiari and her safe return to the United States. Ominously, Iranian authorities announced this week they have completed their investigation of Dr. Esfandiari. The director of the Middle East program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., Dr. Esfandiari traveled to Iran in December of last year to visit her ailing 93-year old mother. On her way to the airport to return to the United States, armed and masked men stopped her taxi and seized her U.S. and Iranian passports. An expert on the Middle East, Dr. Esfandiari is the author and editor of numerous books and publications addressing women's rights in the region, especially in Iran . Prior to the Islamic Revolution, Esfandiari served as the Deputy Secretary General of the Women's Organization of Iran. Please join me and women's rights activists around the world to demand that Dr. Esfandiari be immediately released and returned to the United States. Dr. Esfandiari's critical work on behalf of women and peace must not be silenced. For Women's Lives, Eleanor Smeal President Feminist Majority Foundation |
