Climate Change is a 'Women’s Issue'

Climate Change is a women’s issue, says international anti-poverty agency ActionAid

One week into UN climate negotiations in Bali, Indonesia, and the international community is failing to recognise poor women’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change and their role as the key agents for enabling poor countries to adapt to climate change.

Unless the world recognises that climate change is a women’s issue, poor women will continue to pay the price, says ActionAid. Women need to be given their rightful say in how adaptation funds are spent so they can ensure that their families make the necessary changes to survive climate change.

While the draft text on a roadmap for a post-2012 agreement is a step in the right direction, the launch of negotiations threatens to leave more than half the developing world’s population behind. Women make up 70 per cent of the world’s poor.
