WASHINGTON, Jun 12 (OneWorld) - Afghan president Hamid Karzai unveiled a new 5 year plan for social and economic development at a conference to reform aid efforts to Afghanistan in Paris yesterday, writes the UN News Agency.
"The [Afghan National Development] Strategy identifies its core policy as one of "Afghanization" …[which] is not only a process of channeling more international assistance into Afghan institutions; it is a practice of all Afghans participating in the rebuilding of their country," says UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Ban also called for more aid to be channeled through Afghan institutions and for the government to be more transparent in its use of funds. Journalist Ahmed Rashid recently criticized the failure of aid agencies and foreign militaries to cooperate and the lack of efforts to empower the Afghan people to rebuild their country. |
