How we work

OneWorld United States publishes U.S. and international perspectives on global issues gathered from OneWorld partners worldwide. OneWorld United States, located in Washington, D.C., selects from OneWorld's vast network of nongovernmental organizations, development-oriented news services, foundations, and research institutions the news and views considered to be of the greatest interest to a U.S. audience.

The OneWorld U.S. edition seeks to provide balanced and accurate coverage, identify sources, and provide access to original documents, through links to partner websites. Through links to OneWorld.net, U.S. readers can easily access in-depth information organized into guides on topics and countries.

In sum: OneWorld U.S. disseminates information, functions as a search engine, and serves as a forum through which members can exchange views and ideas.

What is our editorial strategy?

OneWorld U.S. will work with its partners to focus its journalistic eye on:
  • Global issues known to be of interest to North Americans, such as protecting the environment and controlling infectious disease
  • Programs showcasing successful efforts to overcome development challenges
  • News and perspectives from or about countries/issues not reflected in the traditional media
  • Policy debate on issues that affect the future of global development.
  • OneWorld U.S. stresses quality content that provides the reader with background, context, information about on-the-ground realities, and, whenever possible, with ideas about actions or policy alternatives that could have a positive impact on a given situation. The OneWorld U.S. edition takes a solutions-oriented approach to presenting the news.

Becoming A Partner

Becoming a OneWorld partner means that the information on your website will be available to all readers of OneWorld U.S. and other OneWorld editions, guides and channels. When a news item, campaign, or publication from your website is featured on the OneWorld U.S. edition, it is automatically incorporated into the worldwide database, and readers can easily link to your website - resulting in more exposure for your organization and a greater chance of reaching like-minded organizations. Partnership in One World also facilitates your communication with other organizations through e-mail, web discussion lists, and password-protected discussion networks on specific topics.

What are the criteria for partnership?

Since OneWorld depends heavily on information gathered from other sources, and given the large number of U.S. NGOs, OneWorld U.S. must exercise selectivity in developing its partnerships. The key criteria for partnership are:
  • Partners must produce timely, high-quality news and information. OWUS seeks to offer substantive coverage that educates and engages the U.S. public. We focus on alternative perspectives, particularly from the South and the voiceless in the U.S., and want to avoid the sporadic, crisis-driven approach to international affairs that dominates the major media.
  • Partner organizations must offer reliable, accurate information. To maintain the trust of our readers and be accountable to them, the news and views reflected in OWUS should meet basic standards of journalistic integrity. News items should be based on fact and present a fair and comprehensive account of events or issues; analysis and opinion pieces must be clearly labeled or recognizable as such.
  • Finally, partners must produce information that is consistent with the goals of OneWorld. Partnerships cannot be developed with political parties, or groups or organizations that advocate violence or intolerance on any grounds. Partnerships with private sector organizations can be made under certain circumstances.
