08/02/2005 The recent focus on African debt relief and CAFTA has raised the profile of international development as well as the development approaches of governments and multinational institutions. But around the world, people are forming grassroots groups to develop their own creative and effective ways to improve conditions in their communities. These groups, often operating independently from governments and multilateral institutions, take the form of indigenous NGOs, self-help groups, community-based organizations, cooperatives, and social entrepreneurial ventures. The panelists will discuss some of these development alternatives focusing on Chiapas, Mexico and East Africa, and delve into the nature, successes, prospects, similarities and differences among these initiatives, and how they are distinct from World Bank models.
