Association for Women's Rights in Development

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an international membership organization connecting, informing and mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights. Our goal is to cause policy, institutional and individual change that will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere. We do this by facilitating ongoing debates on fundamental and provocative issues as well as by building the individual and organizational capacities of those working for women's empowerment and social justice. If you represent an organization, sign up for our institutional membership -- as an institutional member, you receive access to special services, including: Five copies of each AWID publication (quarterly mailings throughout the year) A quarterly newsletter keeping you up to date on AWID news and events Discounts on bulk publication orders including available booklets and Forum papers Two international Forum registrations at the discounted member rate A link to your organization from the AWID website and all the benefits offered to individual members Institutional membership with AWID is a way to connect your organization with dozens of others working towards women's equality rights around the world. AWID places a particular emphasis on outreach and interaction with our institutional members. Institutional members receive two International Forum registrations at the discounted member rate. To help our institutional members inform like-minded thinkers and activists of their work, their organization's web site is posted on our site. Throughout the year they receive five copies of each AWID publication, as well as a quarterly newsletter. In addition to these regular publications, institutional members receive discounts on bulk publication orders including available booklets and Forum papers. We are working on other ways to help institutional members increase their efficacy as organizations working on women's equality rights.

08/11/2005 According to a new report, sub-Saharan Africa has lost US$272 billion over the past 20 years, which would have been enough to wipe out their debt and pay for every child to be sent to school and vaccinated. These losses have been a direct result of conditions attached to foreign aid, loans and debt relief, which have been imposed upon the countries. The report provides statistics that make it hard to justify trade liberalization, particularly if it is tied to debt relief.
